Contact: Stu Matlow 415-407-5474 Healdsburg Community Band Presents “Longhairs to Looney Tunes” Concerts (April. 15, 2019)--The Healdsburg Community Band (HCB) is presenting two performances of its annual Light Classics concert May, featuring classical music used in cartoon soundtracks since the 1930’s, becoming beloved to generations of children and adults. The first concert is a benefit for the Cloverdale CARE Foundation, supporting education at the Cloverdale Unified School District. It will take place Friday, May 17, 7:00 PM in the East Gym at Cloverdale High School, 509 N. Cloverdale Blvd. (gym is on School Street on high school campus). Admission is free, and all donations will go to CARE. The second will be Sunday, May 19, 3PM at the Healdsburg Community Church, 1100 University St., Healdsburg. Admission is free, and donations will be gratefully accepted. “This program is fun for both the audience and the band,“ observes HCB board president Dave Brandt. “Think of Elmer Fudd singing ‘kill the wabbit…kill the wabbit’ to the tune of Richard Wagner’s ‘The Ride of the Valkyres’ and you get the idea.” In addition to Wagner, the band will perform pieces by Rossini, Offenbach/Roberts, Von Suppe’, R. Strauss, and others, which audience members will remember from Saturday mornings in front of the TV. Matt Wallace will move from the French horn section to the podium to conduct both performances. The Healdsburg Community Band is all-volunteer, comprised of about 50 musicians who get together for the joy of making music and serving the community. The not-for-profit organization supports music at Healdsburg High School with scholarships, equipment purchases, including an annual concert benefitting the Healdsburg Education Foundation. Band members have a wide range of skill levels, and local residents are encouraged to join if they play or used to play an instrument. There are no auditions, but applicants should have a basic ability to read music. ###
